James “Jim” Walter South was born Oct. 23, 1957, in Porterville, Calif. He was the youngest of four children born to Cecil and Julia South.

Jim graduated from Strathmore High School in 1975 and promptly joined the Marine Corps. He proudly served as a Aircraft Ordinance Technician until 1980.

Later, he had three children, Kevin, Heather and David. He worked in the oil fields for 20 years and eventually moved to Oregon to be near his kids.

While living in Corvallis, Ore., Jim worked for Limbwalker Tree Care Co. as their groundsman, for three years.

In 2006, he met the love of his life, Cathy. They married on Aug. 12, 2006. They moved to Scio, Ore., and operated Little Lamb Day Care together. In 2009, Jim begun having health problems.

Jim and Cathy moved to Coeur d’Alene in 2010 to be near Cathy’s daughters. Jim volunteered at the Coeur d’Alene Food Bank until his health worsened. Jim passed away Jan. 17, 2013, at home.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy; sons, Kevin (Janette) of Portland, Ore., and David (Melanie) of Corvallis and daughter Heather; stepdaughters, Julie Welker and Christine (Derik) Scott of Coeur d’Alene; brother Larry (Twyla) of California; sister Lois (Bernie) of California and sister Brenda (Mark) of Texas.

Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor, his work ethic, knowledge of insignificant trivia, his genuine helping and his caring personality.

Thank you to the VA, Pinewood Care Center, River City Hospice and English Funeral Chapel for their care of Jim.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the family home, 4844 W. Cougar Circle, Coeur d’Alene.
