Celebrate Bike to Work Week, May 13-18

| May 11, 2013 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Trade the gas pedal for the two on a bike.

Bike week rides out Monday, and citizens are encouraged to come show their community pride and commitment to better health by riding a bike to work instead of driving in their car.

The week is also a healthy pledge on reducing dependence on foreign oil while reducing traffic congestion and pollution.

What's not to like?

It's not all to and from work, either. The following is a list of activities that include biking and beer sipping. So get on and ride.

Monday: Kick-off Ride: Opening day ride with area bicycle enthusiasts and commuters. 7:30 a.m. start from Silver Lake Mall, in front of the new Sports Authority, to the Coeur d'Alene library for coffee and doughnuts.

Tuesday: Bike Safety Class: Fire Station 3, located at 1500 N. 15th St. near Cherry Hill Park from 6-7 p.m.

Wednesday: Moonlight Ride: Starts at 9 p.m. at Vertical Earth in Riverstone and follows the Centennial Trail out to Higgens Point and ends back at Moontime Pub. Headlights required.

Thursday: Beer Tasting and a Movie: Pilgrims Market is hosting the movie "Klunkerz," 6 p.m., preceded by beer and wine tasting at 5:30 p.m. alongside a bike repair clinic.

Saturday: Roots Pursuit: A bicycle scavenger hunt-type event in which participants will bike to various parks and gather points to win prizes. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the event starts at 10 a.m. at the Community Garden, corner of 10th Street and Foster Avenue. It's followed by the Corporate Challenge Recognition awards ceremony and raffle drawing at noon.
