NIC: Support for event center

| May 8, 2013 9:01 PM

Friday’s Editorial in the Coeur d’Alene Press asks subscribers to help the North Idaho College Board make important decisions concerning the location of the professional-technical campus and the school’s involvement in an event center that is being considered at Riverstone. They suggest contacting the board members or sending letters to the paper with their thoughts.

I am guessing that the intent of the editorial was directed to taxpaying subscribers so that they may contemplate how these projects might affect their property taxes.

I don’t understand why the Coeur d’Alene Press isn’t 100 percent behind an event center that would bring thousands of visitors to our city and also satisfy an important need for NIC growth.

There are many event planners that can’t consider Coeur d’Alene because we don’t have an adequate facility that can handle their crowd. Many sports events, musical events and conventions require accommodations that we can’t provide at this time, so they end up in Spokane.

NIC is a very important asset to our city and community. The particular location of the professional-technical campus isn’t as important as the fact that it is being built and expanded to accommodate the students and the faculty. The availability of an event center for NIC sports activities would be a real plus for all, including those of us who pay property taxes.
