30-Day Notice of Comment Idaho Buckhorn Project USDA - FOREST SERVICE Idaho Panhandle National Forests Bonners Ferry Ranger District Boundary County, Idaho and Lincoln County, Montana The Forest Service, Idaho Panhandle National Forests, Bonners Ferry Ranger District, is proposing a prescribed burning project referred to as the Idaho Buckhorn Project. The purpose of the project is to maintain or improve forage for big game species and grizzly bears, to provide restoration opportunities for whitebark pine and to reduce fuels at the stand and landscape scales. Prescribed burning would occur on approximately 4,000 acres in 10 burn units in the Deer Creek watershed in the following locations: T35N, R34W, Sec. 5, 8, 9, 16, and 17; T36N, R34W, Sec. 29 and 32; T63N, R3E, Sec. 3, 4, 9, 10, and 15; T64N, R3E, Sec. 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 33, and 34; Boise Meridian. A portion of the burn area is in Lincoln County, Montana, on public lands managed by the Bonners Ferry Ranger District. The Forest Service has made a preliminary assessment that this proposal falls within a category of actions listed in the Forest Service NEPA Handbook (FSH) that are excluded from documentation in an Environmental Assessment (EA) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and that no extraordinary circumstances exist that would preclude use of the category (36 CFR 220.6(e)(6)). This comment period provides those interested in or affected by this proposal an opportunity to make their concerns known prior to a decision being made by the Responsible Official.
