LEVY: Seniors deserve a break

| March 10, 2013 9:00 PM

‘Tis the time of year, time to “do it for the children.” I read with interest the letter from Mr. Hanson who with his wife probably have a pretty nice income from the sounds of it. I commend them for their success. They happily support the levy for their children.

I also read the letter from Mrs. Nelson who stated the district has maintained or LOWERED its levy over the years. I went back to my tax bills. For 2011: $272.10 to Dist. 271; $180.74 to NIC. 2012: $283.90 to Dist. 271; $185.10 to NIC. That represented 34 percent and 31 percent of my tax bills, respectively.

The second year was less only because our property value continues to go down. And more irritating is the fact that in many instances the money does not go where it is intended but to SALARIES!

You know, SENIORS need a break here folks! We never win at the polls because the parents far outnumber us. I suggest that after a household, both parties, reach the age of 65 they are exempt from school levies forever. We have paid our dues when we were raising our children and they were in school. It is time for the younger set to pick up the tab.

For two people with great incomes the above mentioned numbers may seem like a drop in the bucket but limited incomes drop pretty deep and pretty hard into the ENDLESS LEVY bucket!
