TEACH: Start at the beginning

| July 14, 2013 9:00 PM

The editorial of Sunday, July 7, certainly covers a number of facets concerning education and philosophies thereof in providing an educated society. Eight “we need” items are listed. Lastly, is listed “Those who can teach.”

Folks, all of the above are certainly important. Any finished product of any craftsman that ever existed depends upon the basic grade of material with which he begins the process.

Let’s look around. Let’s open our eyes and ears. Who and what do we see on our streets and byways? Schools and churches? Athletic fields, etc.? Entertainment venues, media? Yes, even the collegiate campus.

I’m sure that there are many great teachers whom we expect to develop the potential of fine self-motivated students. We also know of many students who “slip through the cracks.” Unfortunately, there are those who “fall into the chasm” and cannot recover, or never got a chance to escape from their natal environment in the first place.

And, importantly, perhaps it has always been this way, or that way, and will continue.

The need for great teachers is a profound statement, but they are only great when the quality of the raw material meets the specification of the craftsman, or the craftswoman.

Where, when and with whom does it start?

Food for thought!
