POSTAL: No taxes, no flyer

| August 28, 2013 9:00 PM

I was wondering, at what point in time did the object of your Sunday editorial criticism, the United States Postal Service, become “a tax supported federal agency?” Per the USPS website, Home Page, Who We Are, Postal Facts, What The Postal Service Wants You To Know, the USPS receives NO tax dollars and must cover all operating expenses from the sale of postage and other services conducted by its operations.

This, however, does not make the decision to NOT post a flyer regarding the wall replica any easier to take or understand. The alleged reasoning for not posting — “then we would have to do it for everyone” — smacks of a lack of ability to make a decision based on the immediate subject at hand instead of relying on some company policy write up intended to do your thinking for you. Perhaps it was felt that no time would have to be spent by the supervisor making the decision (parroting a policy?) to not allow the posting was the easiest way to go, and in so doing could be held blameless for any negative feedback. It should have been allowed and then handle “do it for everyone” later, when and if anything comes up.

Editor’s note: The USPS does receive about $100 million a year from Congress for “Postal Service Fund,” but much more significantly, the agency is borrowing billions of dollars a year from the federal government to make up its annual deficit. Last year alone the USPS posted a loss of nearly $16 billion. We contend that does constitute taxpayer support.
