RUN: Do it for Scott and others
I would like to bring your attention to an event that is taking place this Sunday, Aug. 18. It is the SCOTT DORMAN Memorial 5K Fun Run. Beginning at 9 a.m. at the Fedora Pub and Grill (next door to the car wash at Ramsey and Kathleen) we will run the Centennial Trail behind the Ramsey ball fields south to Riverstone Park and return to Fedora’s. Registration is $10 and there will be T-shirts available for purchase with proceeds going to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund (FARF). In addition, lunch will be available for purchase at Fedora’s, again with the proceeds going to FARF.
Scott Dorman, for whom this event is taking place, is my grandson who passed away Aug. 16, 2010, his 22nd birthday. Scott was born with Fanconi anemia (FA), which is an inherited type of anemia that leads to bone marrow failure. It affects all systems of the body, birth defects being only one of the maladies. One of Scott’s maladies was being born without thumbs but that didn’t stop him from being an award-winning bowler, top dog on skate- and snow-boards, and his sense of humor is legendary. He even became proficient at glass-blowing and making decorative beads that he sold around the city. He graduated from Lake City High School in 2007.
There is so much more everyone should know about FA and how it affects babies, but I am hoping you will attend the event where information will be available.
