POLITICS: Double standards appalling

| August 16, 2013 6:11 AM

So Oprah didn’t get to see a $38,000 handbag at an exclusive boutique, while vacationing in Switzerland. She assumes (and is probably right) that it’s because of her race. While I think it’s incredulous that a store employee would judge anyone on their outward appearance and refuse to show them merchandise based on their superficial judgment, I think there’s another troubling component of the story that is not being reported.

Like who spends $38,000 on a purse?

I mean, last fall the Democrats made it their mission to portray Mitt Romney as a selfish, money-loving, evil, rich man. They wanted all of America to hate him because of his wealth. Isn’t it completely hypocritical that all of Hollywood (the elite 1 percent) is on the Obama redistribution bandwagon, when they are going around dropping a year’s salary on an accessory?

Let’s be honest. If Mitt had purchased a $38,000 wallet last fall, it would have been headline news of the most disparaging sort. Why the double standard?

If Oprah and her celebrity peers truly believe in government-enforced economic redistribution, they could be doing a lot more to lessen the gap between the haves and have-nots.
