CASH: Memo to one who found it

| August 14, 2013 10:54 PM

On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 10, someone driving south Highway 97 found a green metal ammo can along the road. Inside was an entire summer’s wages, paid in cash, with a bank deposit slip already filled out. My son, a river guide, came home to store some things before leaving for the summer’s last trip in the mountains of Idaho. Few river guides drive new cars, and Liam is no exception. The hatchback of his Subaru popped open without his knowledge, and in the 10th of a mile between our driveway and storage shed, that can fell out of the car. In the half hour it took for him to realize the loss, the can had been picked up and hauled away. It has his name and phone number on it, as well as contact and employer information within it.

So whoever you might be, you did not hit the lottery Saturday. Cash can be short in times such as these, and it may be tempting to keep and use it. But what you found were the hard earned dollars of a workingman. Please put yourself in his shoes, do the right thing and return it. And if you happened to see someone else stopped around Powderhorn Bay, mile marker 74, please consider sharing what you saw. Although the situation could be worse (it can always be worse), this is a hard loss to take. I’m hoping whoever has the ammo can will return it intact.
