VOTE: Respect everyone's choices
I write this letter with sadness over the anger people showed if you didn’t agree with whom they thought should be president. My husband just became a U.S. citizen and for six years since we have been back from overseas he struggled with giving up the country he loved but he also learned to love our country through its ups and downs. This was his first year he was able to vote and he read everything the candidates believed in and was more informed than I was.
Our neighbor came over to hand over pamphlets which was not the party my husband was going to vote for and he thanked her but said, no thank you — plus she already knew for a few years what party we were affiliated with. As she turned away she told him she pitied him. She came over later to say she was teasing but in my humble opinion she was not sorry. My husband got pretty angry because he didn’t want anyone to pity him because of his choice and this conversation came up four years ago with me.
She is an elected official in her party and I wonder if they know how she approaches people? What makes matters worse is that my husband just had a heart attack and he didn’t need her coming over and upsetting him to the extent she did.
I hope no matter who you vote for you accept your friends, family and just people you know and respect their choice. We are so lucky to have a country like ours and use our vote to elect whom we want to be our president, congressmen, senators and so forth.
