Holidays and the blues

| November 21, 2012 8:00 PM

Many of us look to the upcoming holiday season with excitement. We look forward to getting together with loved ones and friends, contemplating what will be on the holiday menus, decorating our homes, deciding on presents to purchase and all kinds of other joyous thoughts that come with the season.

The holidays aren't a happy time for everyone. In fact, suicides tend to increase between Thanksgiving and New Years, a strong indicator that for some, the season and the joy that is missing from it, is more than they can bear. While many of us can say we have over-indulged in the food and spirits during the holidays, those who have substance abuse issues tend to see increased problems related to binges during this time of year. Incidents of domestic violence also tend to increase during this time. It's hard to be happy and spread joy when your family is hungry or homeless, if you have been out of work for months and can't afford Christmas presents, or if you are bitter with the turn your life has taken. Giving thanks can be very difficult when you can't seem to find anything to be thankful for.

This isn't an issue to be taken lightly and can be a sign of clinical depression. Those of us who do look forward to the holidays may not fully understand the pain others are feeling. While we may be able to sympathize, we certainly can't empathize. For those who are fortunate this holiday season, please extend a helping hand to those who are not. Donate food, clothing, blankets, household items, time or whatever, in any way you can. There are a number of opportunities to volunteer in our community...pick one.

For those of you who are experiencing the blues, there are places you can go to get help. Start with your physician, who may provide you with a referral for counseling and supports. If you don't have a physician or just feel too overwhelmed, call Family Support Services of North Idaho at 796-4222. We're here to help. Here's hoping for a joyous holiday season for all.
