OBAMA: Assaulted by a pack of lies

| November 2, 2012 9:00 PM

Two letters printed in The Press on Oct. 24, at first glance might seem like just more of the same. But it was more of the same that finally broke the camel’s back. Lies continue to be piled on lies concerning our president. One of these two letter writers believes, apparently, that the president is against not only guns, but anything and anyone connected to them. Owners of guns, ammunition, you name it. He trots out 10 points to make his case, none of them credible.

The other writer criticizes the president for being an apologizer. Where have we heard that nonsense before? Imagine it: The president going around the world, cap in hand, repentant for the sins of his country? It never happened. A non-event, fact-checked and reported as bogus a number of times. But it lives on, like the monster in a horror movie. Hard to kill and hard to ignore. You can sell any lie to some people, evidently, if you repeat it often enough. And this one qualifies. It has certainly been repeated enough.

Checking facts and exposing lies has never been easier. So, why are so many folks unwilling to do it? Wouldn’t it be sensible to make sure our opinions are backed up by facts, and especially so if they’re to appear in the paper? The cow did not jump over the moon. Anyone insisting that it did — in print, especially — is going to come off looking like a fool. Some of these claims against Barack Obama are as naive and almost as ridiculous.
