STORY: Hide it from the kids

I was disappointed to spend a portion of our before-school rush time trying to hide the front page of the local section from my kids. The headline announcing a firefighter’s arrest for having a sexual relationship with a minor is not what I want my kids to see as they are grabbing the paper to read the “Kid Scoop” page on the back of that section.
While I understand that reporting the news is more important than a fluff page aimed at youngsters, it still forces me to have a conversation with my kids about alleged abusers and the awful things they do to and with children. In addition, I have to explain why I tell them that firefighters and police officers are to be trusted when there may be times that they can’t.
