Calling attention to medical orphans

| May 9, 2012 9:15 PM

Aside from being associated with Mother's Day and Memorial Day, the month of May has also increasingly come to be known as Awareness of Medical Orphans Month.

This observance calls attention to the fact that many people suffer from diseases and rare disorders that require expensive medications outside the affordability range of many patients. It is simply a matter of economics that drug companies cannot recoup the huge costs associated with researching and developing drugs that only a relative few require.

Thanks to the government, medicines that treat fewer than 200,000 individuals are designated as "orphan drugs." While manufacturers of these drugs receive certain incentives, more must be done to help those with rare diseases.

HINT: There are more than 5,000 rare disorders that affect fewer than 200,000 people.
