GREEN: Research is enlightening
A letter to editor April 27 insisted that John Green was barred from practicing law in Washington, D.C. It is unfortunate that the writer did not take time to confirm the facts in the case.
Here are the facts:
1. Attorney John Green never practiced law in Washington, D.C.
2. Attorney John Green was never barred from practicing law in Washington.
3. Attorney John Green was asked to represent a client in Texas in a tax case.
4. This tax case was in Eastern District of Texas in the Federal Court.
5. This tax case was very complex and only a few attorneys are qualified to represent clients in such cases.
6. John Green was qualified to represent said the client.
7. A previous qualified attorney left the case.
8. Attorney John Green was then selected to represent the client in said case.
9. As there were almost 8,000 pages of documents to consider in the case Attorney Green asked for a continuance to study them. This was denied.
10. In seeking this continuance there was a disagreement between the magistrate judge and the attorney. The judge then barred Attorney John Green from practicing there.
11. This was appealed.
12. The client sued because he was then without competent counsel and felt his Sixth Amendment rights were being denied (right to counsel); the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals took no action against John Green.
13. Attorney John Green has an impeccable record before the bar in both Texas and Washington.
