COLUMN: Key to motherhood

| March 21, 2012 10:00 PM

I’ve wanted to respond to Dr. StormoGipson’s article on life’s beginnings but was trapped by my response to Joan Harman (which was not published due to scheduling problems). However that problem is now passed and her letter is unworthy of further comment.

First I want to praise Stephanie Murphy for her wonderful My Turn column of March 13. If any of your daughters want a lesson on motherhood (or even womanhood) be sure to include that column. A magnificent job.

I have little to add but want to note that Mr. Santorum’s position is that Joe Schlabodnik’s life begins at conception. The “egg” involved may have begun some form of “life” earlier but it’s not baby Schlabodnik until that baby’s conception. But even if it were that just reinforces Mr. Santorum’s position that life is there at conception. So what is the problem?

But another point. Have we sunk so low that life is reduced to some cold scientific process? As an engineer I am deeply indebted to science for without it engineering could not exist but to fully explain life? Oh of course it explains the mechanics of life but is that the whole process? Is that all there is to those chubby little imps giggling and squealing as they race about the play area? I don’t think so. There is more than a set of differential equations here.

Good job Ms. Murphy. I wish you well. Be prepared for some radical feminist responses.
