DEMOCRAT: We have room for you

| March 16, 2012 9:00 PM

There is an old political joke that goes like this: “I don’t belong to any organized political party.  I am a Democrat.”

And it is true, Democrats, in general, tend to be a disorganized, “big tent” kind of people. We are of many views, various faiths, and even conflicting opinions.

Republicans, on the other hand, have been incredibly organized and seem to all talk from the same play book. Until recently.

It seems that has changed. It seems that the various factions in the Republican Party are vying for control, with confusing results. Witness the Presidential caucus. Witness the conflict over the speaker for a fund-raising event.  Witness the conflict over voting, even in the central committee party meetings. Clearly the Constitutionalists, “Values Voters” and business-focused Republicans have little in common, but each believe they are the “true” Republican.

Most folks I talk to are not such polarized people.  The local Democratic Party is actually quite centrist.  Really!  We are reasonable people who want the best for our families, our state and our country.

In the upcoming primary, we will each have to declare party affiliation in order to vote.  If you have been rather independent, or have even been rather Republican but are dismayed by what you see, you are hereby invited and welcomed to “come home” to the Democrats.  Give us a try.  We value diversity, and honor a variety of opinions and views.

You are welcome!
