AMERICA: The leveraged buyout

| June 17, 2012 9:00 PM

Abraham Lincoln feared a hostile takeover. Lincoln said, “The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe...corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed.”

Wake up, America. For the last 30 years, Republicans have made it clear that their goal is to destroy governance of the people, privatize any public assets that can turn a profit for the Oligarchs, and socialize all of the losses and costs to the proletariat. Electing a Republican to “fix” government is like hiring a pedophile to “care for” your children. When those who hate our government are elected to high office by the American people, should we not expect both sedition and treason?

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group.”

Need we fear foreign enemies when we betray ourselves by voting for scoundrels? A democratic government is not an enemy but an expression of what we do to serve our collective needs. The dagger at the heart of American democracy is corporatism, the very reason we fought World War II.
