ZONING: As a nightmare unfolds

| July 27, 2012 9:00 PM

I had my house built in the Woodbridge area, as it was being developed west of Post Falls about eight years ago, to fit my needs as I aged.

Spokane Rock Products was operating a concrete plant on Pleasant View under a conditional development agreement approved in December 2004. I was not aware of this when my house was being built about that same time.

There was no Sysco’s, Walmart, Cabelas or Love’s.

Last year the agricultural land south of our development was rezoned industrial, even though there was much opposition.

Now the Kootenai Co. Commissioners have approved a zone change for Coeur d’Alene Paving to have a rock crushing operation west of Stateline Speedway, and will probably approve an asphalt/concrete plant at that same location, a little over a half mile from my house.

Who were the commissioners that approved this residential housing development? Who was on the Planning and Zoning Department?

Why would this housing be approved with the knowledge that businesses were going to be built nearly adjacent, and then zoning changes made to surround my home with two new mining operations, big box retailers, a warehouse and another gas/refueling/convenience store? Do the leaders of this county really KNOW how these changes they approve affect the daily lives of others?

This is decision-making at its worst!

There needs to be some changes in Community Development (formerly Planning and Zoning). I can’t believe Commissioners Tondee and Green were re-elected. As leaders of the county, they are charged with promoting the health, safety and general welfare of ALL residents of Kootenai County. This is not being done. Why? You figure it out.

People of Kootenai County, and particularly the area west of the city of Post Falls, need to start paying attention to what is happening and SPEAK UP!
