HEROES: Hail Marines, Paterno
I have two issues I would like to address; I will keep each as short as possible.
First, addressing the letter from Mr. Ian Johnson of Jan. 22 regarding the photo of the Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. In addition to the self-righteous indignations pointed out, I would also like to just add, place the picture alongside the photos from 9/11 showing the destruction of the two towers, bodies either jumping or falling out the building; the destruction of the towers was the work of the Taliban resulting in the death of thousands of innocent lives. These young men in the picture joined the U.S. Marines to help keep our country free, and I feel they were perhaps showing their frustrations on people who have done more atrocious acts than what the Marines were doing. As pointed out these young men were wrong, give them punishment that is required, and then thank them for their support in keeping this country of ours - free.
Secondly, regarding Mr. Joe Paterno. He was fired in a cowardly way, not face to face but by phone. He deserved better. Approach him and let him resign his post gracefully. He said he had reported the incident, but the trustees said they fired him because he failed a moral obligation to do more. My question is did the person(s) he reported to, what did they do with the information given to them by Mr. Paterno? Did they in turn take the matter to higher authorities? If so, why wasn't the matter cleared up in 2002? Will Mr. John Surma be able to look Mrs. Paterno in the face and express his condolences for Mr. Paterno's death, or will he also do this by phone?
