FANS: Where art thou, school spirit?
Reading Hazel Bauman's mea culpa about the Post Falls/Coeur d'Alene basketball game reminds me of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing."
As a Viking fan I may be biased, yet no more than Kerri Thoreson, Post Falls' answer to Louella Parsons. At the end of the game, winning fans are happy, losing fans not so much.
Since forever, when games end on a last-second game winning shot, students have rushed the floor. Administrators shouldn't prevent that show of excitement. Ironically they are expected to build school spirit, like fighting for fish and pigs.
Should the principal have sent the kids home before the game started? As a theme, students dressed as "white trash." That didn't make Post Falls fans "white trash" any more than did the previous week when they dressed as "skiers" make anyone in Sandpoint Lindsay Vonn. If they dressed up as Warren Buffet would Post Falls fans be wealthy? You can laugh or whine, but what you are isn't determined by high school fans.
Were student chants inappropriate? Give me a break. Was it when a basketball player misses the rim and all those students chanted: "Air ball, Air ball?" What must that do to his self-esteem? We have become so "politically correct" that we can't yell at the ref: "Are you blind?" because we might insult Patty Duke because she played Helen Keller.
I guess this town just needs controversy. Gotta go. I have tickets to "Rent."
