DE-ICER: Been there, quit that

I was bragging on Facebook about our local Idaho resourcefulness concocting the sugar bi-product/salt de-icing mixture, saving $27,000 per year. My know-it-all nephew responded that Ohio, Indiana and Michigan had previously tried this mixture. These states found an increase in negative side-effects including increased corrosion, higher phosphorous levels in local bodies of water and a higher demand of oxygen in the local environment.

I'm hopeful tests have been conducted locally on this mixture and would like to know if the findings are similar.
