Bernice M. Altman peacefully passed away Dec. 24, 2011, at Hospice House in Hayden.

Bernice Marie LaCasse (Mix/Altman), Grandma "Bernie," was born May 26, 1914, in Missoula, Mont., to Earnest and Sophie LaCasse. She graduated from Missoula High School and attended Kinman Business University in Spokane.

On May 23, 1938, she married David F. Mix in Missoula and they had one son. The family later moved to Seattle where Bernice worked as an executive secretary for many years. Her husband passed away Dec. 27, 1970. On Feb. 14, 1981, Bernice married Dr. Harry P. Altman, who also preceded her in death.

Upon her retirement she moved to Hayden Lake to be near her son and family. She enjoyed many happy times spoiling her grandsons, David and Steven, with a steady supply of cookies and special times at Grandma's house.

Bernice had many hobbies that she enjoyed throughout her life. She was an accomplished seamstress, lovingly making toys and dolls for family and friends. She also enjoyed golfing, reading, gardening, cooking, and was especially known for her famous "Bernice" cookies which she shared at Christmas with friends and neighbors.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harry LaCasse and Larry LaCasse, and niece Marinell.

Bernice is survived by her son, David L. Mix of Hayden Lake; grandsons David R. Mix of Portland, Ore., and Steven T. Mix and wife Jill of Sandpoint; and two very special great-grandchildren, Hunter Mix and Payton Mix. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Bernice was a special lady and leaves many friends and neighbors who will miss her spirit and positive attitude, which remained with her all her years. She was an inspiration to us all.

A service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
