PLATES: Driving a better bargain

| January 8, 2012 8:00 PM

I agree with Mr. Coulter's opinion on it being a waste to reissue Idaho plates every seven years. Let's go a little deeper.

If the state's reason is they lose reflectivity over time, then I say get rid of the reflective plate as it is not needed. All vehicles have reflectors mandated by federal safety standards. We don't need reflectorized plates that wear out. A standard painted embossed plate would last for decades.

Another saving would be to eliminate the requirement of a front plate; we already allow this on some specialty vehicles. Any arguments against the use of single plates could most likely be answered by one of the many states that only require one plate.

The state could raise additional revenue. Instead of charging, say $6 for two, charge me for one at $4.50 or $5. I'm happy to have saved some and the state makes a little more.
