WOMEN: Stand up for your rights

| February 22, 2012 9:00 PM

In the last 100 years women have gained the vote, been able to have a career, and have had control over their bodies. I am writing this article not as a Republican or a Democrat but as a woman.

Idaho women you must become aware that certain candidates running for President and other government positions would like to control your bodies. Men are making decisions about whether you can decide on family planning. Family planning meaning your ability to control family size. There seems to be a movement afoot to limit a woman's right to decide if she does not wish to become a baby maker as her main role in life. It is simply archaic that a woman's only worth is to produce offspring.

My husband and I decided to limit our family to two children when we were very young. It was our decision to only have the two children as we knew that our income would at best be just middle class. We were able to provide food, shelter, clothing, some travel and some non-name brand extras. If there hadn't been any forms of birth control available to us we would have had many more babies and lived on a subsistence level needing government help just to feed our family. Many candidates running for office currently are advocating that birth control should be abolished.

This is America. If you do not want a large family then you should be able to limit the size family that you want. If it is your religious feelings that you should not have birth control then you have the right to have a baby every year if you want to. It all comes down to freedom of choice.

I feel you should not have more than two children and that you are selfish to have more because there are already too many humans in the world to support. I see wars over food and water in the future, as so many countries have polluted their countries so terribly. This is America and you have the right to overpopulate at will. It is your choice to do so. DO NOT TELL ME THAT I MUST DO THE SAME!

If we as women and the majority in the country do not speak out now we will begin to revert back to becoming some man's chattel again. This is not Afghanistan where a man can maim and kill his wife at will, but America where any woman can be whatever she is meant to be. I am a lucky woman as my husband sees me as his partner and helpmate and that he does not own me. It has worked for 45 years.

We as women owe it to our daughters to take a stand now and tell the men in government to stay out of our bedrooms!
