SHERIFF: Why does party even matter?

Now I figure I have seen it all - politics mixed with law enforcement. Only in Idaho would you see a law enforcement officer advertising in the paper he is Republican. Since when does it matter what party you are to be elected to a law enforcement position? If I get stopped do I have to say "I am a Republican" to get treated with respect? What if I am not Republican, then what?

The two most argumentative things are religion and politics. Could we please just leave them both out of our election and let the most qualified person be elected?

By the way, I am not a Mormon, either.
