RECALL: It's about leadership

| April 27, 2012 9:00 PM

To the people who keep insisting that Mayor Bloem has done nothing wrong: do you not consider misleading one’s constituents wrong? I think it’s wrong. Not only has Mayor Bloem been deceptive in regard to McEuen Park and other issues, her offensive I-was-voted-in-so-get-over-it attitude is dividing our city.

I live outside the city limits, which means I cannot vote on city issues; however, my husband and I own property in Coeur d’Alene, pay city taxes and are concerned about issues facing Coeur d’Alene. Considering the extent and cost — estimated to be $14 million for phase one only — it’s only proper to allow citizens to vote on the proposed grand overhaul of McEuen Park. I’m concerned about the budget for this project since Mayor Bloom has a history of quoting costs that later escalate — sometimes dramatically.

It’s disingenuous to keep asserting that the park upgrade will cost $14 million; Mayor Bloem and her City Council know this is only phase one of a multi-phase project. When all is said and done, I think there will be a $40 million park — and the added annual expense of maintaining it.

I first saw Coeur d’Alene 21 years ago, and it was love at first sight. That was long before the Kroc Center, Education Corridor, new library and Riverstone. Mayor Bloem’s supporters insist that she has made the city what it is today, but the natural beauty and friendly people of Coeur d’Alene speak for themselves. Spending up to $40 million on a park would not enhance our lovely city; it will only distract from its natural beauty.

Why do the mayor and her pro-development cohorts fear putting McEuen Park to a public vote? Because they know that most citizens don’t back a massive overhaul of the park. Mayor Bloem and the City Council were voted into office to represent the people — not their own special interests.

Coeur d’Alene — and Kootenai County — would be far better served by leaders who address the city’s escalating and increasingly violent crime, and growing number of homeless people, rather than add signature projects to their personal legacies.

The city continues to spend money when funds should be put in the bank for required needs, not elitist wants.

McEuen Park doesn’t need an overhaul; the priorities and ethics of the city’s leaders need an overhaul.

To those citizens who value government accountability: the Recall drive — which is headquartered in the Sunset Mall — would appreciate your support.
