League to study Columbia River Treaty

COEUR d'ALENE - The public is invited to join the League of Women Voters of Idaho as they view video and live presentations and have a panel discussion on "The Future of the Columbia River Treaty" on May 5.

This event from 5-8 p.m. includes a Cinco de Mayo Buffet dinner at the Hayden Lake Country Club, 2362 East Bozanta Drive.

The public forum and dinner are part of the LWVID's State Council, which will take place in Hayden Lake on May 4-6.

The Columbia River Treaty between the United States and Canada has served as a model of international cooperation since 1964, bringing significant flood control and power generation benefits to both countries.

The year 2024 marks the end of 60 years of pre-paid flood control space from Canada. In addition, either Canada or the United States can terminate most of the provisions of the treaty anytime on or after Sept. 16, 2024, with a minimum 10 years' written advance notice.

Due to the importance of these issues, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bonneville Power Administration, the agencies responsible for implementing the treaty for the United States on behalf of the U.S. Entity, are conducting a multi-year study of these post-2024 treaty issues.

"Significant issues exist with respect to tribal rights, fish and wildlife, recreation, navigation and agriculture that were not addressed in the original treaty," according to a press release.

A collaborative group representing universities has been meeting to look into treaty alternatives.

The cost for the event and buffet is $25 per person. Payment is due by May 2. Checks made out to LWVKC should be mailed to LWV of Kootenai County, 2916 E. Harrison Ave., Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814.
