CRUELTY: Extend laws to wolves

| April 22, 2012 9:15 PM

Recent television/newspaper reports on changes to the Idaho animal abuse laws which would make these crimes a felony are very confusing. How could the state government consider this, while on a recent broadcast a trapped wolf is being tormented, instead of being put out of his misery? Have we become so desensitized that seeing a wild animal in agony doesn’t make us sick? I hope not.

As a child I learned real sportsmanship from my grandfather’s example. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but never allowed an elk, deer or fish, for that matter, to suffer. His respect for nature never faltered and his appreciation for the northwest and living here gave him the greatest happiness.

I think it wouldn’t be too far off the mark to ask for him, “What if that was your prize hunting dog in that trap?” What then?
