LIES: They should be impeachable
Responding to Almon P. Oliver’s letter regarding Article 1, section 9 and resulting question, “Is that an impeachable offense?”
First, I commend you for reading the Constitution. You are more knowledgeable than our politicians are. (You know how much they like to read!)
A broken vow to uphold the Constitution is a lie and should be an impeachable offense. However, in D.C., there is a tacit understanding it is OK to lie. If any finger pointing began, most of the politicians would have to step down. Indeed, Representative Clyburn admitted, “Nothing we do here is constitutional.”
Equally disturbing, last fall a law was signed to allow the government to hold “suspected” terrorists indefinitely, even if they are U.S. citizens! That is in direct violation of Article 3 regarding habeas corpus and the 6th Amendment requiring a speedy trial. What if the meaning of “terrorist” was interpreted not to mean Muslim extremists, but right wing Bible thumpers, or returning soldiers, or gun owners or pro-lifers? Remember Janet Napolotano’s email that slipped out?
The worst is the executive order, which you will not find in the Constitution. The Constitution gives Congress the responsibility of holding the purse strings, declaring war, initiating impeachments, to name a few. The executive order bypasses Congress. Therefore, we are only one executive order (martial law) away from a dictatorship.
If you throw a frog into a boiling pot of water, he will jump out. If you put the frog into cool water and turn the heat on, he will slowly cook. As a nation, is our frog cooked?
