Bratwurst, breakfast and turkey, oh my!

| September 28, 2011 9:00 PM

Just because summer's over doesn't mean there are fewer fun things to do. For this weekend ... Friday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. get your oompah on at the Post Falls Historical Society's Oktoberfest in the Lions Grand Pavilion at Q'emlin Park. Downtown Coeur d'Alene is also celebrating Oktoberfest on both Friday evening and Saturday. Stop by the Plaza Shoppes to get your beer tasting wristband.

On Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. is the annual Old Pleasant View School Cowboy Breakfast. If you haven't been to this registered historic school house on West Riverview Drive in Post Falls, take the family Saturday morning. Great breakfast of biscuits, sausage gravy and scrambled eggs and you can even climb up to the tower to ring the original school bell to work off the carbs. Proceeds from the $6 breakfast benefit the continued preservation of the building.

You can support both the Post Falls Food Bank and Community Action Partnerships at a critical time by participating in the first and surely annual Turkey Shoot at Cabela's laser range from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, theturkeyshoot.org. Kudos to Kelly Dionne for the inspiration and follow through to make a real difference for the food banks with this event!

Last Saturday was what I'm sure is the last 90+ day of summer and I think everyone who had a boat, jetski, canoe or kayak was on the lake and river. Looked like a regatta of watercraft. By Sunday more typical fall weather was back. One of those locals out enjoying our natural resources was photographer Sean Watson. His tool of the trade wasn't a camera, it was a fly fishing rod. After four years of fishing with a fly on the Coeur d'Alene River Sean landed his biggest fish to date ... a 22-inch cutthroat. Wonder if he thought to get a photo?

Happy birthday today to Ken Cook and Cindy Pascoe. Tomorrow will mark 22 years since I was at Kootenai Medical Center becoming a first-time grandma. Happy Birthday Matthew Snider! Sharing a Sept. 29 birthdate with the grandson are Marilyn Griffitts, Phil Corless, Cindi Schneider, Gina Myers, A'mya Ohlig, Cindy Thoma and Shellie Mundy. My bicentennial baby turns 35 on Friday, happy birthday Sarah Elizabeth! She shares the day with Steve Griffitts, Don Schmitt, Liz Arakelian, Donna Cooper, Kanagara Sibramania and Debra Raymer. On the first day of October Casey Irgens (40!), Layne Pitcher and Kathi Southland celebrate. Jack Sjostrom, Linda Harris, Millie Eylar, David Tabakman and Ami Manning share an Oct. 2 birthday. Dave Bobbitt, Jeff McLean, Dave Priano, Shylo Deubner, Maddison Morrow and Anusha Roy start the week out with birthdays on Monday. Blowing out the candles on Tuesday are Teri Grubbs, Ami Manning, John Beebe, Valerie Queen, Tommy Lynn and Nicole Sobelman.
