FARRAGUT: Here's to Martin Apelman
I wanted to reply to the woman who wrote the item on "Farragut ode to its reunion," by Terri Doughty. I thought she might like to know that Martin Apelman was stationed at Farragut in the 1940s. Perhaps her husband might have known him.
Martin was a wonderful musician who was hired by North Idaho College in the 1980s. Martin died in 1986 in Coeur d'Alene. He left behind a wife and 8-year-old daughter. Martin's ashes were scattered in the mountains of Idaho.
A friend from New Zealand came to visit Coeur d'Alene and in respect for Martin, she gave a donation to the Tubbs Hill Foundation to have Martin's name inscribed on a rock at the entrance to Tubbs Hill. Perhaps this is a place for reunion and a place for peace and love for those we love.
P.S. His daughter returned to Coeur d'Alene to be married in August 2011.
