HIT & RUN: Bad news for driver
To the driver of the SUV I was behind in 2900 block of 12th Street, on 10/26 at about 8 a.m. - I saw the dog dart in front of you. I saw the dog rolling under your car and to the middle of the street. Then I saw you drive away, quickly turning down the next street so no one would see you. What cowardly action you took. There is no way that you did NOT know you hit that poor dog.
I stopped and watched the dog make several attempts to stand, but it could not. Trying to comfort her, I called the phone number listed on her tag. I had to break the news to the owner that her dog had been hit by an SUV that DID NOT stop. I patted her head till she stopped breathing. Her name was "Chica," a beloved family pet that was now dead.
You could have accepted your responsibility, but you didn't have the courage. I left my information with the upset owner and told her I'd be a witness if she chose to call the police. One thing you did do, and I sincerely hope it is yours; you left your front license plate at the scene after hitting the dog. I hope she reports the incident and gives the plate to the police and that they find your vehicle.
I hope you had as much trouble sleeping last night as I did. Would you have stopped for a child? I wonder.
