SCOUTS: Windy Bay a poor choice

| October 23, 2011 10:00 PM

Many people have toured Camp Easton and the proposed relocation site of the Boy Scouts at Windy Bay. It is baffling how any BSA regional board or committee member could consider these two sites as comparable in serving the scouts' summer camp activities.

The acreage size, terrain, and lake access are vastly different, even on the premier North American Lake Coeur d'Alene. The serviceability of use at the Windy Bay site disallows the scouts many traditional practices, so any BSA regional board discussion of opting for this site challenges logic. I doubt any BSA board member would like their name put on a plaque showing support for acquiring this ugly, useless property.

Any repairs or restorations at Camp Easton are easily remedied by contributions, volunteers and the Scouts as part of a merit badge. For a minimal cost lighted signs during the time of camp use would resolve the highway crossing problem.

The Scout Code says a Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent. Mature Scouts in responsible positions of overseeing BSA monies and properties should be required to also be wise and just.
