Are you starting your weight loss program on Monday... again?

| October 5, 2011 9:00 PM

According to the Surgeon General, more than 61 percent of us in the U.S. are considered obese and it wouldn't be out of line to assume that the remaining 39 percent of us either still need, or want to lose some extra weight. It's a challenge these days to find someone who's not "starting a diet on Monday."

Imagine with me the "oh so familiar" beginning to your weight loss plan. It's Monday morning and you're excited and motivated to start losing weight. You have your good food for the day all packed up sitting next to your gym bag, which is loaded with all your workout essentials for your visit to the gym later in the day. Off you go, ready to take on the world and finally get that extra weight off... and then Wednesday rolls around. You've been eating perfectly for two whole days and you're sore from making it to the gym two days in a row, surely you will see some great numbers on the scale.

So you step on, excited to see a 5- or 10-pound loss (because you've been watching The Biggest Loser and that expectation seems rather conservative) and you're up 2 pounds! No wonder we're all overweight! You put in all that hard work for two days and you gained weight instead of losing it. Who in their right mind would continue a plan that creates a 1-pound gain per day? Frustrated and discouraged, you head out into the world for the day, leaving your packed lunch and gym bag sitting inside the front door at home, making a quick stop for a doughnut to ease the pain. And then, if you are like most of us, you start all over again next Monday.

Wait a second! It's time to step off the treadmill of life and into reality! It takes longer than two days to lose weight, as a matter of fact, sustainable, healthy weight loss happens at an average of 1-2 pounds per week. Our impatience for results is our biggest obstacle.
