McEUEN: In layout, don't hide lake
As an outsider who still spends 70 percent of the family budget in Coeur d'Alene, I offer a few brief comments relative to McEuen Field.
A lot of turmoil and misunderstanding could possibly be avoided if the current plot layout sketches were made public and published in The Press. My comments are directed toward the initial layout. McEuen Field is too valuable to become a dog park or the location of a multistory parking building. Maybe the dog park has gone away and possibly better thinking minds have moved the parking structure a block or two away from the water front.
Lake Coeur d'Alene has drawn people to the city because of its beauty, not because of the grandeur of commercial buildings that surround it. If you hide the lake's view behind tall structures, why should tourists come? At least you can see the lake over the top of the boat ramps.
I applaud the efforts of those who have done much to promote the Coeur d'Alene area and their effort has moved the city to the forefront of many trade and travel magazines; however, the old proverb, "haste makes waste" may apply to the proposed McEuen Field project. Possibly more constructive comments are still to be offered for consideration.
