WORDS: Language, interpretation evolve

| November 2, 2011 10:00 PM

I read with interest a letter in Friday's Oct. 28 letters column from Dale Roloff, Spokane, referring to the n-word.

Living in the Coeur d'Alene area for 59 years I thought I knew a lot of miscellaneous history in this area. I was surprised last weekend when a postcard from 1912 came into my possession.

It was mailed from Harrison from a man living in St. Maries to his brother in Appleton, Wis., on Feb. 20, 1912.

I believe this is Arrow Point on Lake Coeur d'Alene, and I was very happy my friend provided me with it. I have never known this name for Arrow Point - N-Head Point- in the past.

I've never considered the name of "squaw" to be offensive and continue to form more and different opinions about names used in the past.
