SCHOOLS: Better ways to vent

| May 29, 2011 10:00 PM

On Friday, May 21, my husband and I attended a lovely evening of music at a local church sponsored by the Lake City Harmonizers. A spaghetti dinner was served and approximately 300 people were entertained by the Harmonizers and other groups.

Just after intermission, the Post Falls High School Madregal Choir directed by John Kratch, performed and did a great job. When they had finished the director of the Harmonizers presented them with a check for $1,000 to support their program. Of course Mr. Kratch was unmistakably thrilled and thanked the director, adding that since the Idaho Legislature had reduced the appropriations to school districts and specific classes, all school programs such as music may not be supported in the future. He went on to criticize all actions of the legislature on education funding.

Mr. Kratch has a right to his opinion, as does everyone else, but it was not the time or place for such a discussion. We all paid good money to have a pleasant evening of food and entertainment. Had Mr. Kratch wanted a forum to debate the issue, this was not the time or place for such a debate. I told him that Jerry Keane was probably one of the best superintendents in the state of Idaho and that I believe he would agree with me that this was not the time or place to rant and rave about what the legislators did or did not do during the session. I'm sure that there were a lot of people who agreed with us when my husband, a state legislator, got up and left.
