Donations to help homeless sought

COEUR d'ALENE - A new organization is teaming up with Cherished Ones Ministries to help the homeless.

Dave Nelson with Family Way of Coeur d'Alene said they have set up donation boxes inside Black Sheep and Taco Time, 2517 N. Fourth St.

He said the idea is, when people go to Black Sheep Sporting Goods and Toys to buy camping gear, they can donate their used equipment such as tents, sleeping bags and lanterns to benefit others. Spring clothing is also needed.

"Our mission is kind of taking the suck out of living in the street," said Nelson, who has been homeless.

Family Way of Coeur d'Alene serves free meals at Heart of the City Church at 4:30 p.m. each Thursday. The organization has been giving away clothes for months, but is running low.

Nelson said he spent several years living on the streets. Hunger and cold are the two primary challenges faced by the homeless.

"We're trying to take the bite out of that," he said.
