McEUEN: A gift for now, future

| May 25, 2011 10:00 PM

We strongly support the Team McEuen development plan for McEuen Field. For some 15 years, numerous studies and civic meetings have been held to discuss and debate the future of this major portion of a Coeur d'Alene park. The work has been well advertised and discussed in news articles and public forums.

Presently McEuen Field is used by only a few residents at limited times of the year. The development plan proposes many improvements for the future. Although some uses may not be of interest to some of us, all of the uses together represent more recreational opportunities for more residents year round.

The boat launch requires a large parking area for trailers and cars. To reclaim this large area for park use requires closing said parking, which will require relocating the city boat launch to a more accessible area, such as the Silver Beach option.

The ball fields are the most restrictive use of the park due to the year-round fencing. The park master plan envisions more areas for families, youth, elderly and special needs residents of Coeur d'Alene.

Team McEuen has indeed developed a master plan that allows for the greatest number of users of all ages and abilities throughout the year. There is no better gift we can give Coeur d'Alene and its future residents.
