Leichner to receive Jim Lyle Volunteer Service Award

Konni Leichner of Hayden Lake will receive the Jim Lyle Volunteer Service Award at the University of Idaho Alumni Association Silver and Gold Reception Thursday at The Coeur d'Alene Resort.

Leichner earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education from the university in 1972 and taught high school for four years. She also worked as events coordinator for Kootenai Medical Center, now Kootenai Health, in Coeur d'Alene. She and her husband, Rich Leichner, also a U-Idaho alumnus, are longtime residents of Hayden Lake and raised their sons, John and Kirk, there.

Leichner served a six-year term on the Alumni Association National Board of Directors and chaired the Kootenai Alumni Chapter for seven years.

"Konni doesn't just serve on boards," said former Alumni Association national president James Dickinson. "In any conversation with Konni over one minute, her university will come up. Her passion comes through. It spills to everyone around her - peers, potential students. Everyone around Konni is either a Vandal, or will become one."

Home of Marge and Barry Lee to be featured in Country Sampler

Country Sampler magazine's July 2011 issue, on sale May 31, will feature the Hayden home of Marge and Barry Lee in the article "Coming Out of Retirement."

After finding that retirement community living wasn't for them, the couple started again in a new-construction home now bursting with five-star style thanks to rescued and rejuvenated furniture and an eye-catching array of red, white and blue collectibles.

Much of the Lees' furnishings have come from thrift shops or discount stores, but get a new lease on life from fresh paint finishes or other alterations.

"People think I've spent oodles of money on the house," Marge says, "but they're just seeing the objects, not the years that went into collecting these things on a shoestring. It's a matter of having attractive furnishings, but that doesn't happen overnight."
