NIC women tied for 11th

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - North Idaho College is tied for 11th place after Monday's first round at the NJCAA women's golf tournament at LPGA International Golf Club.

NIC shot 375. Defending champion Daytona State shot a 295 and leads by 10 strokes.

NIC freshman Rachel Westby, from Post Falls High, led the Cardinals with an 86.

"Rachel played so well, and she still felt like she left a bunch of strokes out there," said former NIC coach Randy Boswell, who is helping with the Cardinal women's team this week as NIC coach Derrick Thompson is with the men's team this week at the NJCAA tournament in Odessa, Texas, which starts today.

After playing all spring in miserable weather in North Idaho, the Cardinals are playing in 80-degree breezy weather in Florida.

"We were hoping for a little wind and rain - we'd feel right at home," Boswell joked. "I'm just trying to keep them hydrated. It was a pleasant relief, getting out of the cold and the rain."

The 72-hole tournament runs through Thursday.
