UNION: It's not a dirty word

| May 15, 2011 10:00 PM

Someone once said that if you tell a lie often and loudly, then people will believe it. That is what I think about every time an elected official, candidate, letter to the editor writer or opinion piece author uses the term "union bosses." They are, I assume, referring to the educators and staffs of local education associations, the Idaho Education Association and the National Education Association.

As a 37-year member of these associations, I volunteered my time to serve organizations that helped improve student learning, teaching, working conditions and leadership skills. These organizations are truly democratic, with actions and resolutions based on the vote of the membership.

I served as vice president and president of the Coeur d'Alene Education Association and IEA Region 1 President. At no time was I given instructions by the IEA or NEA to give orders in the manner of a "union boss." I did not give orders to the membership I served. We worked together to achieve our goals and to promote the welfare of our students and all educators.

Please be suspicious when you hear the term "union boss." It makes me wonder if the person really is concerned with the truth.
