Fourth-graders plant tree to honor veterans, active military personnel

| May 15, 2011 10:00 PM

Today we fourth-graders at Betty Kiefer Elementary School planted a tree on the playground. Grace Tree Service generously donated a tree to us. This worked out really well, because we are learning about trees, plants and how they function in nature.

Mr. King and Mr. Castning from Grace Tree Service came to our playground, dug a hole and taught us how to plant a tree properly. They also taught us how to treat a tree and take care of it right. We learned that trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. We also learned, "Trees planted low don't grow. Trees planted high won't die."

This is not just any tree though, it is a memorial for our veterans and people currently serving our country. Two fourth-graders actually have parents serving right now. They got to be the first to shovel dirt around the tree. Then the rest of us got to put in a shovel full as well. Every time we see the tree, we will think about all the veterans and how much we appreciate them.

Thank you again veterans, troops and Grace Tree Service!

Sincerely,

BETTY KIEFER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOURTH GRADE
