BOARD: Keep it independent

| May 14, 2011 10:00 PM

Mr. Meyer distorted the meaning of Ann Seddon's words when responding to her letter concerning the tangled affair of teachers' union and the school board. Presently the Coeur d'Alene teachers union recruits trustee candidates with promises of financial and campaign support to get their candidates elected to the school board, then proceeds to negotiate with the school board for its contract and perks. This is a far throw from simple teacher interest in elections. When a union seizes control of the board, it results in negotiating with handpicked allies during contract talks. It means union control of curriculum, operating budgets and school policy. Parents and the public are blocked from the process and a tight club controls education affairs.

Teachers should always be carefully listened to by the board, as they are the ones closest to the education of our students. However, they can be heard without the union leaders controlling our schools. Individual teachers have a wide variety of opinions and beliefs in what is best for education. I am confident an independent school board can weigh the input of the professional staff without the union having board control.

Incidentally, I understand Mr. Meyer is on the negotiating team for the Cd'A teachers' union, and sent the letter offering support to the candidates.
