Point guard Dean changes

mind, will leave EWU

CHENEY - After previously informing a new coaching staff he was going to remain at Eastern Washington University, point guard Glen Dean notified new head coach Jim Hayford on Wednesday that he has changed his mind and is leaving to attend the University of Utah.

"I was certainly surprised," said Hayford. "Since I was hired as head coach, he had made recent commitments to our program and his teammates to remain at Eastern."

Dean started 51 of the 53 games he played the past two seasons as an Eagle, averaging 12.7 points and 4.3 assists per game. He was the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year in the 2009-10 season and was a second-team All-Big Sky Conference selection this past season.

Earlier, Collin Chiverton, a 6-foot-6 forward out of City College of San Francisco, signed a letter of intent with Eastern Washington.

Chiverton averaged 19 points, five rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in leading CCSF to the 2010-11 California Community Colleges Athletic Association title.

Chiverton redshirted at Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. (2008-09), then played one season at Salt Lake Community College before transferring to CCSF.

Coeur d'Alene's Norris

to run at Montana

Coeur d'Alene High senior distance runner David Norris recently signed a letter of intent to compete in track and cross country at the University of Montana.

Norris is the defending Idaho state 5A champion in the 800 meters, and he's already run a career-best 1:54.96 this spring.

Norris placed third at the state 5A cross country championship in 2009 as a junior and was eighth in 2010.

"David is going to be a good addition to our strong middle-distance group. He'll come in and contribute to that and also benefit from that," Montana distance coach Courtney Babcock said. "Just watching him run, I feel like he's going to be able to do the longer end of things as well. Whether that's as a freshman, I'm not entirely sure."
