McEUEN: Other options available

| May 13, 2011 10:00 PM

There is no doubt that McEuen needs a facelift, but the one presented by the city is not realistic given the size of the community and the current economic times. If the plan had been a scaled back version with a legitimate relocated boat ramp, the community would support it more.

I have not heard of Blackwell Island as an option for a public ramp. Considering how The Resort will benefit from a McEuen facelift and has even offered in the past to fund and maintain a garden in that area, to offer public access to Blackwell would help to move this project forward. A year-round public ramp with a pay-for-parking area would benefit the city, The Resort and the public.

McEuen would then be available to become a draw for all ages with its new multiple use areas. Tennis, basketball, bocce ball, splash pad, a dog park and a new skate/bike park would bring all ages downtown to play. The proposed parking and Centennial Trail access would satisfy everyone's need for this area. The expense to build and maintain fountains and an ice rink should not take up the green space next to a beautiful lake.

Some people feel a new skate park is not needed since one already exists. The current land was donated by the city to get the unwanted skating element out of the downtown area. It is in an out of the way location, basically not monitored or maintained, except when necessary.

That attitude about skating doesn't exist anymore. Now is the time to provide a convenient, family friendly location for this activity. Many communities highlight their skate parks, knowing they are a tourist draw. Lewiston opened a new city skate park this year.

Hopefully, the city will see their way to providing a park for all ages with a more reasonable budget.
