• 5A Region 1 golf tournament

LEWISTON - Springtime weather returned just in time for golf regionals, and the 5A field responded with low scores Monday at the Region 1 tournament.

Coeur d'Alene High won its seventh regional in eight years, shooting a team score of 295 to top host Lewiston (301) at Bryden Canyon Golf Course. Brennan Stillinger (68) and Michael Porter (70) both fired under-par rounds to lead the Vikings to state, which will be held May 16-17 at Shadow Valley Golf Course in Boise.

"It was pretty nice weather - not windy, and the greens were more receptive than they usually are down here," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "I was real proud of the boys for stepping up and winning the regional at Lewiston's home course."

Also qualifying for state as individuals were Lake City's Spencer Skipper (68) and Kevin Porto (71), with Skipper firing a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim medalist honors over Stillinger.

"I feel bad for Lake City - they shot a 305, and that's the lowest non-qualifying team score I've ever seen at a regional," Duncan said. "Post Falls shot well, too ... our region is loaded with good teams."

Senior Chelsea Porter shot a 91 to lead the Coeur d'Alene girls to a second-place

finish behind Lewiston. The Vikings' 403 qualified them for state.

"We were very excited to play today," Coeur d'Alene girls co-coach Keri Jaworski said. "It wasn't our overall best day, but at the same time we did well.

We were excited to have Chelsea lead us - she has been solid, and we hope to make a great showing at state."

Post Falls' Maddie Dodge took home medalist honors, shooting a 9-over 80.

"I'm pretty proud of how we played," Post Falls girls coach Matt Barkley said. "Maddie had an excellent round today. She has put together three solid rounds for us in a row."
