Spokane man gets assault sentence

COEUR d'ALENE - A Spokane man was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in prison for aggravated assault and the use of a knife in committing the assault.

Daniel Gean Wilson, 34, admitted to participating in the beating of a man at a residence near Spirit Lake on July 26, 2009, according to the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

District Judge Benjamin Simpson ordered the first four years of Wilson's sentence fixed and the remaining eight years indeterminate, with credit for time served.

After a day of heavy drinking, Wilson and a second assailant named Keegan Vantuyl beat and threatened a man because he answered questions about the white separatist movement incorrectly, the prosecutor's office said.

Wilson was arrested in March 2010. He has an extensive criminal record in Wyoming, Montana and Washington; past convictions include burglary, larceny, three counts of domestic assault, malicious harassment and 4th degree assault.

"Mr. Wilson's conduct, when combined with his long criminal history, justified a long prison sentence," Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh said in the press release. "Over the next four years he will either learn in prison to conform to society's rules, or he will spend the following eight years in prison."

Vantuyl was arrested in July 2009. He was found to be in violation of federal probation and sentenced to two years of incarceration and one year of supervised release, the prosecutor's office said.

Cd'A Rotary contributes $15,000 for Mobile Clinic

COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Rotary Club recently donated $15,000 to Dirne Community Health Center for its mobile health unit.

The unit will allow more Dirne patients to gain greater access to medical services, primarily in Dirne's homeless outreach program.

"This mobile unit will provide space for exams, but it also will help carry what four of us tote in five gallon buckets now," said Dr. Ryan Smith, director of Homeless Outreach, who has been seeing his patients in coat rooms and under the rain in parking lots. "A private exam space is pretty important," he added.
